Considering the ubiquitous state of Wi-Fi service in major markets across world, the frequency at which Wi-Fi issues still occur is alarming to both subscribers and operators alike. For the majority of subscribers, Wi-Fi issues are reported because of a slow Internet connection, or no Internet connection at all.
There are numerous reasons why each of these cases can occur, outlined in the following table:
Slow Internet Connection | No Internet Connection |
Distance from Access Point | Client connectivity issue |
Neighbouring signals increasing noise in channel | Hardware configuration issue |
Heavy bandwidth usage by another client | Distance from Access Point |
Device is deployed in a busy channel |
How can operators minimize the impacts of these potential service inhibitors?
Service providers need a solution that will optimize their Wi-Fi networks with remote management and automatic connection of new devices. Newer IEEE 802.11 standard Wi-Fi technologies such as 802.11r Radio Resource Management (RRM) are enabling access points in residential gateways to expose more information and become more intelligent in the management of their wireless domain. Self Organizing Wi-Fi (SON) strategies have also changed the way operators can manage their Wi-Fi signals. When a SON strategy leverages using an Auto Configuration Server (ACS), coupled with 802.11r capable radio, these technologies can pave the way to a more optimal Wi-Fi experience.
